India Launches Chandrayaan-4: Aiming for Lunar Sample Return
In a historic step for space exploration, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched Chandrayaan-4 early this morning, marking its most ambitious lunar mission yet — aimed at bringing back samples from the Moon’s surface.
The mission was launched at 5:30 AM IST from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota using the GSLV Mk III rocket, India’s most powerful launch vehicle to date.
“This mission is not just for India, it’s for humanity,” said ISRO Chairman Dr. S. Rajan during a post-launch press briefing.
What’s Special About Chandrayaan-4?
- First Indian mission to bring back lunar soil and rock samples
- Landing zone: South Pole region of the Moon
- Rover expected to operate for 14 Earth days
- Collaboration with international space agencies
The lunar sample return mission is considered a major milestone, placing India alongside elite space powers like the U.S. and China.
